Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was born Jacqueline Lee Bouvier on July 28, 1929, in Southampton, New York to John Vernou Bouvier III, a Wall Street stockbroker and his wife Janet Norton Lee. In 1933 Mrs. Kennedy's sister Caroline "Lee" Bouvier was born. Their primary residences during these years were in New York City and East Hampton, New York. Mrs. Kennedy's parents divorced in 1940, and in 1942 her mother Janet married Hugh D. Auchincloss the heir of Standard Oil, with whom she had two children, Janet and James. In addition to half siblings, the marriage also brought Mrs. Kennedy two stepbrothers Hugh Jr. (Yusha) and Tommy, as well as a stepsister Nina. After the divorce of her parents Mrs. Kennedy and her sister Lee resided in New York with their father, or McLean, Virginia and Newport, Rhode Island with their mother.
Mrs. Kennedy spent her early school years in New York City, first at Miss Yates's preschool before attending Miss Chapin's School on East End Avenue. In 1942 she enrolled at Holton-Arms School, in Bethesda, Maryland, before attending Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut in 1944 until 1947. Upon graduation, she attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, spent her junior year studying in France, first at the University of Grenoble and then at the Sorbonne. Upon her return she transferred to George Washington University in Washington D.C. to finish up her senior year of college, graduating in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in French Literature. After graduation Mrs. Kennedy and her sister Lee spent the summer touring Europe, from which they published the book One Special Summer.
Upon her return to the United States in 1952, the Washington Times-Herald hired Mrs. Kennedy as their "Inquiring Camera Girl" and she produced a column which including photographs of people interviewed on a variety of subjects. It was during this time that she was briefly engaged in December 1951 for three months to John Husted, a stock broker. Mrs. Kennedy first met Senator John F. Kennedy at a dinner party thrown by a mutual friend Charles Bartlett. They began dating, and their engagement was announced on June 25, 1953. The couple was married by Boston's Archbishop Richard Cushing at St. Mary's Church in Newport, Rhode Island on September 12th 1953, and they honeymooned in Acapulco, Mexico. Upon their return they moved to Hickory Hill in McLean, Virginia for four years before selling it to John F. Kennedy's brother Robert and wife Ethel, and subsequently moving to N Street in Georgetown. During this time Mrs. Kennedy suffered a miscarriage in 1955 and gave birth to a stillborn daughter, Arabella Kennedy, on August 23, 1956. In the year that followed Jacqueline gave birth to a daughter Caroline Bouvier Kennedy on November 27, 1957.
In January 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. Mrs. Kennedy, pregnant and advised by doctors to remain at home, was still an active campaigner. She answered letters, taped commercials, gave interviews, and wrote a weekly nationally distributed newspaper column, "Campaign Wife." On November 8, 1960, John F. Kennedy won the presidential election and on November 25, Mrs. Kennedy gave birth to their second child, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr.
On January 20, 1961, at the age of 31, Jacqueline Kennedy became the First Lady of the United States of America. In this role she was responsible for the planning and execution of social events at the White House such as state dinners, diplomatic receptions, and in this capacity promoted the arts by inviting artists, writers, scientists, poets, and musicians to mingle with politicians, diplomats, and statesmen.
Mrs. Kennedy's first major project as First Lady was the restoration of the White House. She enlisted the aid of many experts, established a White House Fine Arts Committee, and created the post of White House curator. Gathering outstanding examples of American art and furniture from around the United States including many historic items that had belonged to former presidents and their families, she eventually restored all the public rooms in the White House. Mrs. Kennedy was also instrumental in the publication of the White House Guidebook, sales from which further funded restoration work, and helped pass Congressional legislation to have White House furnishings belong to the Smithsonian Institution and therefore treated as museum items that could not be removed from the residence by departing staff. CBS Television asked Mrs. Kennedy to present a televised tour of the newly restored White House, and on February 14, 1962 eighty million Americans watched the broadcast, and it earned her an honorary Emmy Award.
As First Lady, Mrs. Kennedy traveled extensively in both public and private spheres. She was known for a keen interest in other cultures and an ability to speak several foreign languages, including French, Spanish, and Italian. Mrs. Kennedy traveled with the President, representing the United States abroad most notably in Canada, France, Vienna, and Greece and Mexico. Upon the invitation of the U.S. Ambassador to India John Kenneth Galbraith, Mrs. Kennedy and her sister Lee traveled to India and Pakistan, a trip that was widely covered by the press.
On August 7, 1963, Mrs. Kennedy gave birth to their third child, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy at Otis Air Force Base, five and a half weeks prematurely. He suffered from hyaline membrane disease (now known as respiratory distress syndrome) and was rushed to the Children's Hospital in Boston where he died two days later. In November of that year Mrs. Kennedy accompanied President Kennedy on an official trip to Texas, and on November 22, 1963, President and Mrs. Kennedy were in Dallas, Texas when he was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dealey Plaza.
Mrs. Kennedy left the White House on December 6, 1963 and temporarily moved into Averell Harriman's Georgetown home, before buying her own residence in the same area in 1964. Shortly afterwards for privacy reasons she moved the family to an apartment on Fifth Avenue in New York City. In October of 1968, Jacqueline Kennedy married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, and remained his wife until his death seven years later on March 15, 1975. In the same year she accepted a position as an editor at Viking Press in New York City and later moved to Doubleday as an associate editor. During this time, Mrs. Kennedy continued working with projects relating to historic and cultural preservation. She was influential in saving Lafayette Square in Washington D.C. from demolition and in New York City, she led a campaign to stop the destruction and renovate Grand Central Station.
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis died on May 19, 1994 from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and was laid to rest beside President Kennedy in Arlington National Cemetery.
This collection of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis papers contains personal and professional materials relating to her public and private life as well as her role as First Lady of the United States of America. The papers document her interest in such topics as the redecoration of the White House, travel, State visits, arts and culture, press coverage, as well as her involvement in a variety of cultural projects, organizations and associations. The collection spans the years from 1926 to 2002, and the materials consist principally of staff files, correspondence, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and albums as well as other materials accumulated by Mrs. Kennedy during the course of her life. The collection is arranged into three series: Series 1. Textual Materials; Series 2. Audiovisual Materials; and Series 3. Scrapbooks and Albums.
The first series contains textual materials donated as part of Mrs. Kennedy's personal papers that were originally kept both intellectually and physically separate from audiovisual materials. This series is arranged into three subseries: 1.1. Staff Files; 1.2. Condolence Mail; and 1.3. Printed Materials.
Series 1.1. contains files related to White House and personal staff members under the employ of Mrs. Kennedy. It is further arranged into four distinct subseries: 1.1.1. Mary Gallagher Files; 1.1.2. Pamela Turnure Files; 1.1.3. Letitia Baldrige Files; and 1.1.4. Nancy Tuckerman Files. Mary Gallagher was the personal secretary of Jacqueline Kennedy from 1957 until her departure from the White House and subsequent move to New York in 1964. Pamela Turnure was the White House Assistant Secretary for the Press from 1961 until 1964; Letitia Baldridge was the White House Social Sectary from 1961 until May of 1963; and Nancy Tuckerman was the White House Social Secretary from June of 1963 until 1964, when Tuckerman then became Mrs. Kennedy's personal secretary and chief of staff. The materials found within these subseries primarily relate to the White House Social Office and press/public relations, as well as her personal and professional correspondence following Mrs. Kennedy's departure from the White House until her death in 1994. Major topics include the redecoration of the White House, State visits and foreign travel, social and cultural events, as well as Mrs. Kennedy's involvement in the arts.

This series contains condolence that was forwarded to and managed by Mrs. Kennedy's personal secretaries because they contained requests for charity, mass cards, photos, or other, or were considered mail that required special handling or a more personal response that wouldnât be considered "general condolence." Each piece of condolence mail within this series includes an outgoing carbon response letter from Mrs. Kennedyâs office in lieu of the mass-produced response card that were sent for general condolence mail found in the Papers of John F. Kennedy.
The materials in this series are arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent, and include telegrams, letters, cards, photographs, and other tokens of sympathy from the general public and various organizations, both American and international, government and foreign officials. Topics include expressions of sympathy for the death of the President, memorial suggestions, offers of tributes for the JFK Library, sympathetic appeals for aid, and requests for photographs or other mementos. Of note is a letter from Maxine McNair, the mother of Denise McNair, one of four girls killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham in 1963.
The second series, Audiovisual, contains photographs and recorded materials that were donated as a part the Jacqueline Kennedy personal papers and were kept physically and intellectually separate from textual materials. Audiovisual materials were collected by Mrs. Kennedy and members of her staff and serve to illustrate portions of Mrs. Kennedy's life, work, and travels, as well as to document her official and non-official interests. Audiovisual material is arranged into four major subseries: Series 2.1. Personal Photographs, Series 2.2. Photographs for the White House Guidebook, Series 2.3. Photographs from Staff Files, and Series 2.4.Recorded Material.

This series contains condolence mail received by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and differs from the larger collection of Condolence Mail (#11) in the Papers of John F. Kennedy. This series contains condolence that was forwarded to and managed by Mrs. Kennedy's personal secretaries because they contained requests for charity, mass cards, photos, or "other", or were considered mail that required special handling or a more personal response that wouldn't be considered "general condolence." Each piece of condolence mail within this series includes an outgoing carbon response letter from Mrs. Kennedy's office in lieu of the mass-produced response card that were sent for general condolence mail found in the Papers of John F.
