John L. Saltonstall, Jr. was born in 1916, in Massachusetts. In 1938, he became part of the eleventh generation of Saltonstalls to graduate from Harvard University. He became involved with politics in 1950 when he served for two years as Deputy General Counsel for the Department of the Army. Saltonstall was involved in John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign of 1960, serving as the Director of the Committee of Arts, Letters, & Sciences for Kennedy for President. In 1962, Saltonstall was appointed to the President’s Committee on Juvenile Delinquency and Youth Crime as a Special Adviser. He served as delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Massachusetts in 1960 and 1972. Saltonstall ran for U.S. Representative from Massachusetts’s 10th District in 1958, and was a candidate in the primary race for mayor of Boston in 1971. John Saltonstall died in April 2007.
This collection of John L. Saltonstall’s papers relate to the 1960 presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy. Much of the material concerns his role as director of the Committee of Arts, Letters, & Sciences for Kennedy for President. The collection consists of one series, 1960 Campaign Files, 1959-1960.

This series consists of correspondence, letters, campaign materials, newspapers, and magazines from the 1960 presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy. The materials record the internal workings of the Committee of Arts, Letters, & Sciences for Kennedy for President, of which John Saltonstall served as Director. The series also includes correspondence and form letters that reflect the process of garnering support from "liberal" members of the Democratic party, as well as political cartoons depicting the political climate of 1960.
