Users of these materials are advised to determine the copyright status of any document from which they wish to publish. Researchers who desire digital reproductions of material in this collection should contact Museo Ernest Hemingway in Cuba directly; the Kennedy Library is able to provide paper photocopies only.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law. The copyright law extends its protection to unpublished works from the moment of creation in a tangible form. Direct your questions concerning copyright to the reference staff.

The Finca Vigia ("Lookout Farm") estate was Ernest Hemingway's primary residence from 1939 to 1960. He lived there with his third wife, Martha Gellhorn, and his fourth wife, Mary Welsh Hemingway. He wrote several of his most significant books, including For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea, at the Finca. Following Ernest’s death in 1961, Mary Hemingway brought many of his manuscripts and documents back from Cuba and donated them to the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. Mary gave the remaining materials and the property itself to the Cuban government with the agreement that it would become a museum. However, the tropical climate and lack of financial resources endanged the museum's contents.
In 2002, the Finca Vigia Foundation was founded in order to "provide the research and technical assistance necessary to restore and preserve Ernest Hemingway’s home and its contents at Finca Vigia in San Francisco de Paula, Cuba." In collaboration with the Cuban Ministry of Culture, the foundation launched numerous conservation projects involving a bi-national team of experts. Digital copies of documents and photographs in Cuba have been given to the Kennedy Library so that U.S. researchers can have access to Hemingway’s Cuban papers. The library received the first batch of scanned copies in June 2008.
This collection contains reference copies of papers held by the Museo Ernest Hemingway at the Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Republic of Cuba. The Cuban materials have been scanned as part of a preservation project initiated by the Finca Vigia Foundation. Color printouts of these digital files are available to researchers at the John F. Kennedy Library. The copies from the Finca Vigia span the years 1925 to 1966, although the bulk of material dates from 1940 to 1960. The collection is divided into Ernest's papers (Series 1) and Mary's papers (Series 2). Each half is further divided by type of material. Series 1 is arranged into four subseries: Manuscripts, Outgoing Correspondence, Incoming Correspondence, and Other Materials. Series 2 is arranged into three subseries: Outgoing Correspondence, Incoming Correspondence, and Other Material.
